Embedding Core Values at Tinsley Meadows Primary Academy

Tinsley Primary Academy wanted to revise its core values, so they were simpler, more memorable and easier for pupils to understand.

The aim was to create a visual identity that would help every child recognise what their values meant in daily school life.

The Challenge

As a large three-form-entry primary academy with a nursery, SEN provision and a PRU unit, the school needed a values system that worked for a wide range of ages and needs. Pupils had previously found the values difficult to remember, and messaging around the building felt disconnected from the school’s wider identity.

My solution

I developed a creative concept based on the school’s initials and new values: Team, Proud, Motivate and Achieve. Inspired by the tree in the academy logo, the design used four characterful letterforms to bring each value to life in a simple, child-friendly way. I used a small star motif interacting with each figure to capture the essence of each value – for example the Proud ‘P’ figure appears to be holding up the star and the Achieve ‘A’ figure is reaching up towards the star above it. This concept is designed to be versatile so the designs can be used in several different ways, both as a set or individually.  

The first stage included collectable enamel badges and postcards to reward pupils for demonstrating the values. This gave staff a practical way to celebrate positive behaviour while helping children make a tangible connection with the new language.

In the second stage, I created a cohesive range of wall graphics for classrooms, corridors, stairwells and the school entrance. Each area used the same visual language in a different way, giving pupils repeated opportunities to notice, discuss and understand the values as they moved through school.

The outcome

The refreshed values are now visible, memorable and meaningful across the academy. Pupils and staff have responded positively to the designs, and the values feel embedded in the school environment rather than added on. For leaders, the project shows how thoughtful visual communication can strengthen culture, support behaviour and help children understand what their school stands for.
